Description
Three interconnected strategies:
1. Preserving original source materials in all formats, including web-based content, with focus on materials from historically underrepresented cultures and populations
2. Supporting the innovative maintenance and sustainability of technology, tools, and infrastructure for content related to the Foundation’s social justice orientation
3. Creating and strengthening networks for the interdependent sharing of resources, services, and collections

Who Can Apply
The Foundation makes most of its grants to organizations in the United States that have been determined by the IRS to be section 501(c)(3) public charities. The Foundation also makes grants to charitable organizations outside the United States that have 501(c)(3) status or that are equivalent to US public charities
Grant application consists of four pieces:
1. Information on the proposed grant and organization
2. A proposal narrative document that provides detailed information on proposed work
3. Supplemental documents
4. A budget and budget description outlining how funds would be spent
Additional Eligibility Requirements
The Public Knowledge grantmaking program makes grants to institutions and organizations. Mellon does not make grants directly to individuals, although we do support regranting programs that benefit individuals. We welcome inquiries, which can be submitted via our Grants Portal
